• Click on the + button at the lower-left corner and select location. 
• You can choose nearby points or your current location and send it to the person. 
• The recipient will get a Google Maps link with your current location. If they have Google Maps, the message forces it to open while they can also use the browser on their device.

However, you can constantly delete your location history or use the incognito mode each time, so your data won’t be recorded. 

• To enable incognito mode on Google Maps, launch the app.
• Tap your profile picture. 
• Click Turn on Incognito mode.

However, once you enable that, you will stop getting personalized recommendations, and no data will be saved. In addition, your location will not be updated, and we do not recommend that, especially when you share your location with someone.

• Scroll down to Timeline and tap on it.
• On the next page, “Activity Control,” under Timeline, you see an option to enable location history. If it is enabled already, you can proceed below.

How to view location history on the browser 

• Open the Google Maps on your browser and log into your account 
• Click on the hamburger and select “Your data in Maps.” It will only show the last place you visited, as Google has decided to store your history on Mobile devices.

How to check Location history using the Google Maps app

• Launch the Google Maps app and tap on your profile picture.
• Click on Timeline.
• It will take a moment to go back in time. After that, you will see the last place you visited. 
• You can use options like Day Trips, Insights, Places, Cities, and World at the top of your screen to access your location history. 
• Click on the drop-down menu next to “Today” to select the day and month.
• If you want to edit anything on your location history, click the pencil icon at the button.

How to delete Location history on Google Maps

Your location history is sensitive data, and because it is, Google lets you delete it. You can choose to have them deleted automatically or manually. Anyone you decide, you can follow the procedure below.

Manually delete Location history data

• Open Google Maps on your device and tap on your profile picture.

• Tap on the toggle and confirm your biometrics or facial ID.
• Select the standby time before your WhatsApp locks automatically when you exit the app.
• Also, you can decide if you want to show notifications from the app on the lock screen. 

• On Apple iOS, head to Settings>>Privacy>>Screen lock and toggle on Require Touch or Face ID. Select the standby time, and that’s it. 

Lock Chat

You can lock individual chats on WhatsApp. If you find it stressful to unlock your WhatsApp each time you want to access the app, you can lock individual chats. Perhaps the reason for locking the entire app is one chat, you can use the Lock Chat option.

• On Android, press and hold the chat you want to lock.
• Once selected, tap on the three dots at the top right corner.
• Select lock chat and press continue. 
• Confirm your biometrics and the chat will be locked. 
• To access the chat, tap on locked chats at the top of your chats list and enter confirm your biometrics. 

Enable two-step authentication 

Not just your WhatsApp, if an app supports this option, you should be using it. This makes it impossible for someone to hack your account. In addition, you need the PIN when linking your account to a new device. Hence, someone can’t link your account to theirs without your consent. 

When enabling two-step verification, add your email in case you forgot your code, you can retrieve it. WhatsApp randomly asks that you input the PIN so you don’t forget it, anyway. 

• To enable two-step verification on WhatsApp head to Settings. 
• Tap on Account>>Two-step verification. 
• Follow the screen instructions and set up your PIN.
• After that, go back to the “Account” page, and tap on email to add your email address.

Enable disappearing messages 

While WhatsApp encrypts your messages, it doesn’t stop someone from seeing them when they snoop or spy on your account. To ensure no copy of your sensitive conversations or images, WhatsApp allows setting up disappearing messages. 

• To enable disappearing messages on WhatsApp, open the chat you want to set it up for and tap on the three dots at the top right. 
• Select disappearing messages.
• Under the message timer, you can select how long before the message disappears.

• On iOS, open the chat and tap the contact’s name at the top. 
• Select Disappearing messages and choose a time frame for the messages to disappear. 

Encrypt Cloud Backups

Your WhatsApp backups are stored in Google Drive or iCloud. It makes it easy to restore your chats when moving to a new phone, but there is a loophole that can be used to access your data. Unfortunately, these backups are not encrypted, but you can enable encryption on backups. 

• On Android phones, Head to Settings>>Chats>>Chats backup>>End-to-end encrypted backup>>Turn on. You can follow the same procedure to enable it on your Apple iPhones. 

Common WhatsApp scam

You might randomly receive a message on WhatsApp, tricking you to click on a link. The truth is that you should not click on any suspicious link, especially when it is from someone you don’t know. Also, those messages asking you to pay for WhatsApp or subscribe to WhatsApp Gold are all scams. And yes, WhatsApp is free, and you do not need to pay before you can use the app.

Check and adjust WhatsApp privacy settings.

WhatsApp has added some security features to help you better manage your privacy on the app. Head to Settings>>Account>>Privacy to see some settings to protect your account.

There, you can control who can see your last seen on WhatsApp. However, if you enable that feature, you will not see people’s last seen. In addition, you can set who can see your profile picture, status, and live location. There is an option to turn off read receipt, meaning no one would know when you read their message nor view status, but you won’t know who views your status either. 

Check linked devices

WhatsApp can run simultaneously on two phones, with one as a companion device. Someone can use the feature to spy on your conservations, as there is no way to find out unless you check.

• Direction: When you share your live location with someone on WhatsApp, clicking the link opens Google Maps. They can locate you by clicking on Directions, which directs them to your location. 

• Live location: If you are traveling, you can share your live location with families or friends in case of an emergency so they can locate or at least say where you are. 

How to share live location using WhatsApp on Android 

If you are using an Android phone and want to share your live location with someone, the process is straightforward. Follow the steps below to get started.

• Launch the WhatsApp app.
• Click on Chats and tap on the person you wish to share the location with.
• On the message bar, tap on the paperclip icon. 
• From the pop-ups, select the location.
• To share your current location, Tap on “Share your current location.”
• Tap on Share Live Location if you want to keep updating the person with your current location.
• Choose how many minutes or hours you want to leave the location.
• There’s an option to add a comment before clicking the send icon. 

If you have shared your location with someone, maybe to get directions to where you are currently, they can click the Live Location link. It will open Google Maps. To locate you, they only need to click on directions to get the best route to where you are. 

How to share live location using WhatsApp on iPhone 

There’s a difference between sharing live locations using WhatsApp on iPhone and Android. Follow the steps below to share your location, if you are using an iPhone. 

• Launch the WhatsApp app on your iPhone and click on chats. 
• Tap on the person you want to share your location with, to open the conversation.
• You can start a new conversation by tapping the New Message icon on the Chats page if you don’t have existing chats with the person.
• Click on the + icon at the right side of the message tab
• From the pop-up menu, select a location. 
• You will need to allow permissions if it is your first time sharing a location using WhatsApp. Select Once, while using this app, or always. We recommend Always if you intend to share your location for a long time.
• Tap Send Your Current Location. You will see it below the map on your screen. A list of nearby establishments like hotels, parks, schools, churches, and stores that you can choose to share instead. 
• A message with a red pin indicating your location will be sent to the recipient.
• The person can tap on the Map to open Google Maps then click on directions to receive the best route to your location 
• To share a live location that updates the recipient with your current location, tap Share Live Location.
• It is at the top of the listing. You can select 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours. 

What happens after sharing your Live Location 

The recipient will get a map message with the View Live location. When they click on it, Google Maps will open, but still on WhatsApp. To get directions to your current location, they will tap on your profile picture, which tells them how many meters you are away from them.

When they tap on the tab above your pin location and click on Get directions, Google Maps will open. To get the routes to your location, they need to Click Directions. Tap on Start, and the voice assistant will guide you while they come to you. 

What will happen if you delete the live location message without stopping it?

WhatsApp knows people will try to be smart. Someone can share your live location with themselves and delete the message afterward. Hence, once the Map message is deleted, the live-location sharing stops automatically. They would only see your location when the message was directed with a caption live location ended with the time it was last updated.
